There’s a new way to celebrate the spirit of travel the next time you fly with Spirit Airlines.
Spirit just launched a new line of trading cards, which passengers can collect every time they travel with the ultra-low-cost airline.
The full set includes six cards celebrating several aircraft from Spirit’s past and current fleet: the Airbus A319, A320 and A321, plus the newer A320neo and A321neo. The first set of Spirit trading cards is sponsored, appropriately, by Airbus and displays Spirit’s historic liveries as well as its current distinctive yellow hue.
Don’t bother trying to buy a set of these cards, though: the only way to get them is to fly Spirit, ask the pilots for a card during boarding or disembarkation, and hope one of the airmen has some on hand (of course, the cards will likely start showing up on eBay as more people collect them).
Spirit is the latest airline to embrace the trading card trend after social networks highlighted a nearly secret and largely unwritten program that other airlines like Delta Air Lines have had in place for years for those “who know”. Southwest Airlines similarly launched its own line of trading cards this year.
Spirit’s adoption of the fun program is notable as the airline looks to move away, at least partially, from its previous model and its reputation for offering low fares and low service, to a more tiered product that incorporates premium service elements into the mix. It also comes as the airline has struggled to find stable financial footing: the airline is in the midst of its second bankruptcy in two years, and it was just two months old. faced speculation regarding the possibility of imminent insolvency.

For now, however, the trading cards appear to be another sign that Spirit is trying to boost its brand and join its competing airlines, at least in spirit.
