Mudgee is one of the best places in Australia for outdoor activities. It is also only 45 minutes from Sydney, which makes it a great west central destination.

Because? You have the Wollemi Wollemi National Park on your doors, the beautiful Cudgegong river that runs through the city and some of the best hiking routes in Nueva Wales del Sur.

Besides, the best part? You can combine all these Funny activities with some of the best wine, cheese and gourmet food in Australia. How about a hard mountain bike ride with a cold local beer and a delicious gourmet food …

For me, that’s the best day.

At this time there is a recreational outdoor boom throughout the country. 3.7 million Australian adults participated in Bushwalking during 2023–24: The latest results of Ausplay’s survey show how popular have become.

Epic Hiking Routes around Mudgee

Ok, we go outdoors …

Whether you are in long distance hiking, steep mountains or simply as walking on a weekend, you will find something in Mudgee.

Walkway

This could be my favorite walk of all time in the region.

The walking track follows the Goulburn river to the world -famous ‘Great dripping wall’ where water drips through the sandstone to create this characteristic of natural water. The walk itself is relatively easy, so this is ideal for families or for those who relax in Mudgee hiking culture.

What makes it special:

  • Incredible rock formations
  • Funny places to swim on the way
  • Great for photography
  • Pistas to walk with dogs

Dunns Ganguddys swamp path

This track is inside the Wollemi National Park located in the world heritage.

The range of natural characteristics here is incredible. You will walk through the ancient bushes, beyond the pristine holes, to see points with panoramic views.

But the great part … It is also a popular camp destination, so it can make this day walk in an escape of several days in the desert.

Windamere dam circuit

Do you need something a little easier, but it is still satisfactory?

The Windamere dam and its surrounding area have some beautiful short walks with excellent water views. This is just 20 minutes by car from the center of Mudgee Town, so it is also very easy to access if you want a rapid dose of nature.

The roads to walk in the Windamere dam connect to the picnic and holes areas, so it can easily spend a whole day exploring.

Mountain cycling adventures

Mountain cycling In Mudgee? Severely underestimated.

Mudgee Common has 35 mountain bicycles for all skill levels, from easy beginner routes to unique techniques that expert cyclists will worship.

Mudgee Common Trail Network

The place to go to mountain cyclists.

Mudgee Common is growing all the time, with a community of local riders and the Regional Mountain Bicycle Club of the West Medium by adding and maintaining new paths all the time.

You will find:

  • Green tracks for beginners
  • Blue intermediate paths with some technical characteristics
  • Black advanced paths for emotions seekers
  • Impressive rural views all the way

Hargraves Historic Goldfields

Something a little different …

Hargraves’ old gold mining city is a great place for mountain bicycle in real Goldfield sites. The paths are woven through historical mining areas, around old mining equipment and weeds claiming sites.

It is a bit like obtaining a history lesson while it is put in shape.

Aquatic sports activities and rivers

Put in wet and wild on the main river route of Mudgee, the Cudgegong River.

Kayak in the Cudgeong River is a totally different perspective from the Mudgee region. The winding river through pastures and thickets and you will see the native wildlife that you didn’t even know they were local. Maybe even an ornitorrinco if you are lucky and silent!

Holes

There is nothing like a refreshing sauce after a long walk or a bicycle ride.

The Mudgee region has long been the home of many swimming places, transmitted through generations of premises. Some are easy to access through a walking track, while others require more adventure to get there.

Superior swimming points:

  • Pools in Drip Gorge
  • Beaches in the Windamere dam
  • Hidden places on the Cudgeong River
  • Rock pools in Wollemi National Park

Roca and agitation climbing stains

Do you like the adventure at higher altitudes?

Arenisca rock formations around Mudgee provide some fantastic places to climb. The rock is of good quality and there are routes for a variety of different levels of skill.

But here is the thing …

Most of the best climbing places are in private property or on the network and require some local knowledge to access. It is worth talking with local climbing groups or hiring a guide for your first incursions on this side of the region.

Observatory and Star Gestation Experiences

The day ends by admiring the Mudgee night sky.

The MUDGEE Observatory provides stars placement experiences that are the perfect end to an active outdoor day. The Observatory is the home of high -power telescopes that reveal the Milky Way throughout its glory.

Minimum light pollution means that the collapse of the stars here is insurmountable.
