Newark’s flight operations are improving, and United is now promoting cheap flights

Do not look now, but things begin to return to the track at the Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Construction on the busiest track of the airport wrapped earlier this week, 13 days earlier than expected.

“The construction project of the airport run is now complete,” said Jon Gooda, Vice President of Operations of the United Airport in a letter to United customers. “That means that all Newark tracks are open, and we are sure that this will lead to even better time performance for our airline.”

That, combined with a reduced schedule and patches to air traffic control communications, should stop the worst interruptions that affected travelers last month, said the Secretary of Transportation of the United States are Duffy on Monday, speaking with Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, which operates an important center in Newark.

Now, Kirby said, customers can have an incentive to return to the busy airport: “Rates are better than they will probably be in the years,” he said Monday.

It is not wrong. Our partners in Point path He found cash prices on some Newark flights in 12% compared to last summer, establishing a potential decision: would a cheap flight agreement be enough to take it to the airport?

A tumultuous month

The passengers faced thousands of flight cancellations and delays at the end of April and May, due to a trio of problems that were aggravated in EWR: interruptions of the Federal Aviation Administration, shortage of air traffic control personnel and the rehabilitation project of the current track.

Travel problems caused massive headaches for passengers, with common long -term delays in the terminal, on the streets of filming and in the air, and Airlines offered flexibility to travelers To change your tickets.

Although together, the United States Department of Transportation and experts with whom I talked all insisted security was never at riskGreat amounts of travelers chose to avoid Newark and fly outside an airport different from the region.

Are things improving in Newark?

It is too early to promise a summer of soft insults in the center of New Jersey, particularly with the obstacles that travelers can face when the afternoon storms appear. But there are some signs of encouragement that the worst problems we saw in May could, at least for now, be behind us.

At the end of last month, FAA said Reduce the amount of flight per hour allowed in Newark, Hoping to carry the take -off and landing schedules at a more manageable rate. United, with much, the largest carrier in the airport, praised the move.

Then, on Monday, the New York Port Authority and New Jersey, which governs EWR, marked the end of the track construction project that had been scheduled until June 15. Meanwhile, the DOT hopes that the patches destined to underpin communications in the FAA FAA installation that directs Newark online airspace should be online in the coming weeks.

“All who touch the problem are giving their effort completely sincere, are inclined to the problem and help solve the problem,” Duffy said at a press conference on Monday.

Advance

The numbers are improving. On Sunday, around a fifth of incoming flights to Newark they were delayed, according to Famous -It is not insignificant, but much better than 40-50% of the flights that routinely reached the door in May. Only 18% of flights to Newark were late on Monday, better than several other arrival rates of US airports.

Things help, Duffy and Kirby argued, they are reduced schedules airlines that will operate in EWR at the end of October. Between June 15 and October 26, FAA will limit takeoffs and landings to only 68 hours (34 take -offs and 34 landings). Historically, the airport has had the capacity of up to 77 Total aircraft movements per hour during peak periods.

United expects to fly around 380 daily departures this summer, the airline said at the end of last month. That was reduced by about 7% of the 410 that had originally planned. The carrier, Kirby said on Monday, has already eliminated flights from his summer schedule, so customers should not see additional cancellations as a result of reductions.

“If you are buying a ticket this summer, you can trust that this is the schedule,” said Kirby, while predicting that Newark would be the “most reliable” airport in the New York city area in the coming months.

Cheap flights available?

Kirby also made a non -subtle overture to attract the flyers to the airport with the possibility of cheap flights, due to discounts after the carrier put “far behind” in his Newark reserves.

“That means there are more seats available,” Kirby said, and if you are an airline, it is usually better to sell a low -price seat than to let it fly empty. “So now is the time to book your vacation. If you want to go to Europe, or want to go throughout the country, now is the time.”

The data suggests that ‘Newark Disconts’ are happening

There are merits in Kirby’s statements, especially when it comes to Newark’s unidirectional reserves.

Unidirectional national flights in United Out of EWR have dropped 8.6% compared to last summer, according to the data available on Tuesday through the collaboration of TPG with Point pathA free web browser extension that shows points of prize prices on Google flights along with cash rates.

Unidirectional international flights in United have dropped even more, in more than 12%.

These are some of the other trends we are seeing:

  • Unidirectional national reserves in other The airlines in addition to United fell 12% compared to last summer, and 10% for international flights. Award rates for both types of reserves fell around 8%.
  • Round trips from Newark in United and other airlines were cheaper than last summer, but the difference with respect to last year was less pronounced than unidirectional rates.

Note that the route of the points had already noticed the rates in all areas Below this summer Nationally, although awards rates were closer to last year.

Should I fly outside Newark?

After all, it would have few repairs on flying out of Newark if a flight or itinerary outside that airport was significantly cheaper or more convenient for me than another airport in the region. In fact, I am planning to do that in about 10 days.

If there was one thing, it would remain a little Cautely, at least for the first part of the summer, my trip to Newark would begin and then connecting elsewhere. So, if you are in the fence on flying out of Newark, maybe err next to a flight without stopping.

I would also make sure to book my flight with a card that has travel insurance protections, so that I have the opportunity to reimburse if I would be stranded for some reason; Personally, I normally reserve my flights with American Express Platinum Card®.

You can find some of the TPG Favorite cards that have such protections here.

Long -term obstacles remain

Despite the recent progress to bring Newark flight operations to “Back On Track”, long -term obstacles remain. Six of the 22 air traffic controllers with complete certification in the FAA Philadelphia center, almost 28%, have been licensed since a particularly stressful technological interruption in April.

Completely solving a greater national scarcity of controllers is a process of several years, since I explained in an in -depth story earlier this year.

“You can’t break your fingers and make it happen very fast,” Duffy acknowledged this week.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has proposed billions of dollars in initial funds to review the ATC infrastructure of the Nation, a proposal widely praised by the airline industry.

That money for FAA is folded in a larger financing bill, which includes a wide range of priorities of the Trump administration, which approved the camera last month and now sits with the Senate.
