15 places where you need a visa or ETA to travel with an American passport


If you hold a American passportYou are probably used to travel internationally with relative ease. It is possible that, then, knowing that several countries still require that Americans jump through some hoops to visit.

As of February, at least 15 countries require that US citizens obtain a tourist visa or another form of electronic travel authorization before visiting.

Note that this list does not contain information about countries that the United States Department of State has advised US citizens who refrain from traveling Level 4 alerts. Nor does it detail the destinations that are currently not issuing visas for Americans, nor does it provide information about countries that TPG has not recently or routinely covered.

United Kingdom
