The most important and possibly the most important rule to keep in mind with Chase is their rule 5/24. Simply put, this rule states that anyone who has opened five or more new credit cards in the last 24 months will likely be declined for a Chase card.

Additionally, there are some Sapphire family-specific rules to keep in mind:

  • Currently you cannot have a Sapphire Reserve open card.
  • If you previously earned a bonus in the Sapphire Reserve, you will most likely not be eligible to earn another one.
  • If you previously had a Sapphire Reserve, you may not be eligible for this offer, even if you did not earn a bonus on that Sapphire Reserve.

In short, if you have never had the Sapphire Reserve and you are under 5/24 years old, you should qualify for the welcome bonus.

Of course, Chase will always consider your entire credit profile when determining your eligibility. Having less than 5/24 and being a new Sapphire Reserve customer will not matter if you have a poor credit scorelow income or a bad relationship with Chase.

Can I have both Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred at the same time?

One of the biggest frustrations with the Sapphire family of cards used to be that you couldn’t hold both cards. Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees) at the same time.

When Chase revised its Sapphire eligibility rules last year, it got rid of this annoying rule. You can now have both Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred at the same time.

The fact that you currently have or have had Sapphire Preferred will not affect your ability to obtain a welcome bonus at Sapphire Reserve.
