Earlier this month, some TPG employees were planning a trip to New York City for some important strategy sessions. The dates were not flexible due to previous travel commitments, but we think it would not be too difficult to find affordable adaptations.

This is how we fulfill a transfer bonus in our American Express Platinum Card® Business in almost $ 4,500 in hotel rooms.
The dilemma
The story begins with a trio of TPG employees who try to organize a couple of days of meetings in person between vacations, work trips and other previously scheduled commitments. When everything was said and done, this left a very specific time window in the middle of September.
And unfortunately, hotels were astronomical rates, with current properties in Manhattan floating in the range of $ 700- $ 800 per night. This was far beyond our normal budget, so we stayed with two very unattractive options: eat the cost of the rooms or postpone the trip completely.
Then, the points of the points smiled at us with an impeccably timed transfer bonus.
A 25% bonus for Hilton’s honors
On September 2, Amex launched a 25% bonus in the transfers of membership rewards to Hilton honors (Note that these offers can be attacked, and some accounts may not be eligible). Normally, you can transfer the Points from Amex to Hilton in a 1: 2 ratio, so with the 25%bonus, that meant that each Amyx point would become 2.5 Hilton points.

We currently value the amex points 2 cents each in our September 2025 Valuationswhile Hilton points are only 0.5 cents each. Hilton also has just implemented some The really frustrating price increases In many of its properties, even with a transfer bonus, converting its Points from Amex to Hilton Points is far from being a guaranteed way to obtain the best value.
Fortunately, we find a perfect scenario.
Reserve the rooms and save thousands
We started with the two employees who needed a room for two nights. Many Hilton properties were charging 150,000 points (or more) per night, but we could find an Inn Hampton with only 80,000 points. Two rooms for two nights meant 320,000 Hilton points, or 128,000 amex points with the 25%bonus.

The cash rate for each of these reservations? $ 1,657.20.
I transferred the points to my Hilton account (them Published instantly) and then reserved the two reservations on the phone, adding to each employee as the second guest so that they could register.
A few days later, we needed to take a room for another staff member, this time for just one night. The aforementioned Hampton Inn was no longer available, but we found a close Hilton property for only 85,000 Hilton points, or 34,000 AMEX points with the transfer bonus.
The rate paid here was even higher: $ 1,098.81.
Once again, I transferred the points to my account and repeated the redemption.
In total, these three reservations would have delayed $ 4,413.21, but instead, we use 405,000 Hilton points, or 162,000 AMEX points.
That means we obtained the following redemption values:
- Hilton points: almost 1.1 cents per point
- AMEX points: more than 2.7 cents per point
Both are well above our valuations for these currencies.
