However, it won’t be Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship for much longer. It will soon be replaced as Disney’s newest cruise ship by Disney Destiny, which will begin sailing in November 2025.
Disney Adventure, which was partially built when Disney Cruise Line acquired it from Dream Cruises, will be the largest ship in the fleet when it sets sail for the first time in 2026, when it will also claim the title of Disney’s newest ship.
The current second newest ship is disney wishwhich was launched in mid-2022 as the first ship of the line. Wish class (previously known as Triton Class). After Disney Wish are the two ships of the line. dream class — disney fantasy (2012) and disney dream (2011).
In total, Disney currently operates six cruise ships, far fewer than cruise brands like royal caribbean and Norwegian cruise line. Founded in 1998, the line has gone long stretches (like the decade between Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish) without adding a single new ship, with occasional bursts of expansion. including one that is taking place right now.
But the line’s fleet, which totaled just four ships in 2012, will grow to 13 ships in 2031 after the latest ordered hardware is launched. That means the line will have tripled in size in the nine years between Disney Wish’s debut and 2031.
The line has never retired a ship since its debut in 1998. Disney’s oldest cruise ship, Disney Magic, is approaching 30 years old, but its maintenance is quite impressive, as is the rest of the fleet.

In general, Disney’s newer ships are larger and have more amenities than their older ships. If you’re craving the most activities possible on a Disney cruise vacation, you’ll want to stick with the line’s four most recently built ships.

What is the oldest Disney Cruise Line ship?
Disney Cruise Line’s oldest ship is Disney Magic. Introduced in 1998, it was the first Disney cruise ship ever built and its arrival marked the beginning of the line.
Disney Magic is not only Disney’s oldest cruise ship, but also Disney’s smallest cruise ship. At only 83,000 gross tons, it is approximately 40% smaller than Disney’s new Treasure. As a result, Disney Magic has fewer locations than Disney Treasure or the upcoming Disney Destiny, but also a more intimate feel.
Because it offers fewer and smaller attractions than Disney’s newer ships, Disney Cruise Line has historically used Disney Magic and its slightly younger sister ship, Disney Wonder, for destination-intensive itineraries—voyages where you’ll spend much of your time off the ship and onboard amenities are less important. Think: popular Alaska itineraries.
Disney also sometimes uses these smaller ships to domestic ports outside of Florida, such as Galveston, Texas, or on the West Coast.
What new Disney Cruise Line ships are coming?
Disney Cruise Line currently has several new cruises on order.
The first two to arrive will be Disney Destiny in November 2025 and Disney Adventure in March 2026. The latter was already under construction when Disney purchased it from Dream Cruises; will focus on travel to Asia. The former is part of the line’s Wish Class and will be a sister ship to Disney Treasure and Disney Wish.
Additionally, Disney Cruise Line has two more Wish Class ships on order for 2027 and 2029, along with three more new ships that will be a new class of their own, debuting in 2029, 2030 and 2031.
The Wish Class ships are being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, which also built the Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

Disney’s two oldest ships are about 40% smaller than the newer ones and have fewer such features. They have a noticeably more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively large mass-market boats. They also house fewer people. While Disney’s newest ships are designed to carry about 4,000 passengers with each berth full, the line’s two oldest ships (known as the Magic Class) are only designed to carry about 2,500 passengers with each berth full.
That makes Disney’s two oldest ships a good option for someone who wants to try a Disney cruise but isn’t eager to travel with large crowds. The older ships in Disney’s fleet thus attract a subset of Disney fans who prefer more privacy on a cruise and don’t mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also sometimes less expensive to book, per day, depending on the exact itinerary.

Additionally, due to their size, older Disney ships can operate itineraries to places that are not as easy for larger ships to visit. Not every port in the world can accommodate a ship the size of, say, Disney’s Treasure.
Keep in mind that all Disney ships are regularly renovated and upgraded every few years, so even older Disney cruise ships have newer carpeting and updated furniture. However, the cabin style of the original four ships remains of the “classic nautical” variety.
In many cases, older ships have also renovated entire restaurants and bars over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer ships, so don’t equate old with a diminished experience in this case. Instead, think of it as each boat having its own size and set of offerings. Different guests will have different ships that they love more or less than the others to suit their individual vacation tastes.
