Most people sail for a week or perhaps two maximum. But there is a growing contingent of travelers who go to the sea and stay there, sometimes for more than three or four months at the same time.
Holland America It is located among the cruise lines that offer “world cruise ships”, which are extended and deep itineraries that reach parts of the world that most of the cruises of a week (and in fact most travelers) never experience.
This year, the great trip of Holland America included a 133 -day cruise, Polo A Polo and 28 countries that sailed to Greenland, Antarctica, the West Coast of Africa and a large number of ports in South America.
His great world trip with a similar but longer name, the jewel of the itineraries of the Crown of Holland America that attracts its most loyal customers, covered 124 days and 34 countries. The destinations included the island of Easter, Cape and Sardinia City, to name just a few.
I approached the Zuiderdam line ship in the Mediterranean As this year’s great world trip was coming to an end to take a look at how these exceptionally expansive cruises work.
What to wait on a Holland America World cruise
The long -term cruise definitely has a different sensation of a standard -week trip to the Caribbean or the Mediterranean. It is something that you feel on board from the moment you arrive, a feeling in which the guests have established and feel without a hurry.
There is no hurry to do tourism or put a lot in every day. Many guests who sail on board the Grand World Voyage have extensive travel experience and they may not need repeated visits to Rome or Barcelona, so sometimes they stay on the ship or adhere to the port. There is no crush at meals, and there are no corridors full when the ship reaches the port. The rhythm is committed but relaxed, and is built for travelers who have the time and means to assimilate everything.
Grand World Voyages are designed to serve an experienced clientele, including the many repeated guests who have sailed on large previous trips. The itineraries 2027 recently announced, for example, partially follow the route of the second trip of Captain James Cook and include stops in the remote Atlantic islands of Santa Helena and Ascension. Such ambitious planning would not be possible with a short trip.
This does not mean that there are no surprises or that on board are not likely to change. An itinerary change in the middle of this year’s great world trip meant that the ship would jump ports in the Red Sea in favor of additional stops in Africa and the Mediterranean. But when talking to passengers on board, there was no much disappointment or concern for these changes. A guest said that a stop in Türkiye, which was not originally planned, was among his favorites of the trip.

It’s about relationships
People make friends on short cruises. But when you are at sea for weeks or months with the same group of people, your travel companions look more like the family. Repeat the cruises on the great trips of Hollanda América reserve their trips so they can navigate together, and visit between the trips, said Guest Johnston. He fell in love with long -term cruises in 2017 and has sailed alone on all Grand World’s trips since 2023.
“I’m never worried to find someone to eat or join me to explore ports,” he said. “My ship friends have become some of my best friends. They come from all over the world. We share the love for travel, but otherwise we bring different interests, life and perspective experiences, which seems refreshing to me.”
This feeling of familiarity also extends to the ship’s crew, which reminds the passengers of previous cruises and know them well. They maintain eyelashes on daily orders of daily drinks of specific cruises, dietary restrictions and cabin preferences; They remember the names of their children and their birthdays. And the feeling is mutual. The guests remember the names of their favorite crew members, and many said they hope to see them year after year.
While many crew members and personnel leaders return every year, when it is feasible, for the trip of the great world, Holland America emphasizes that it strives to provide a consistently high level of service in all its cruises, something that their guests appreciate.
To give him an idea of how well the community was aboard Zuiderdam, I consider something that I experienced on my second day of Grand World’s trips. I was walking through one of the common areas of the ship, and a guest approached me and said: “Did you approached you in Athens?” I had done it, and I received this question several times while I was on board, usually followed by a warm welcome. The guests are so in tune with who comes and comes to the ship that newcomers are notable, even in a ship of the size of Zuiderdam. It can transport more than 2,200 passengers. Within 48 hours after shipping, passengers greeted me by name in the elevator and asked about my future travel plans.
There is always a celebration
A lot is needed to impress travelers who have been in dozens of countries and have spent weeks sailing casually through the world’s artistic, natural and architectural masterpieces. No event on board will compete with, for example, the ancient city of Petra, but the offers of the ship still try to fulfill the moment.
The response of Holland America is to create events on board (parties, happy hours, emerging food windows, special menus) that guests can enjoy on big trips. And the range of offers is wide.

While on board, the ship organized a special Easter Brunch that followed the religious services of the morning. In the most fun end of the holiday spectrum, the ship’s crew and the passengers were still talking about the APRIL Innocents Day that had included a daily newsletter full of false events and meaningless ads about the system’s PA system.
Many events adapt to reflect the fate of the ship at any given time.

“This year it seemed that we had a special party, thematic night or other event almost every day,” said Johnston. “Some of my favorites were food truck nights around the Lido pool, with several stations that offered local food from French Polynesia, South Africa, Turkey, Italy and other destinations.”
While we went out NaplesThere was a party in the pool with personal pizzas (courtesy of the chef -based chef, Ethan Stowell), served in red verification tablecloths. We navigate to Rome with a list of Italian pop song reproduction as an accompaniment as well.
Bring everyday life on board
Each ship has activities on board, such as craft classes and card games. But with the same group of people on board for prolonged periods of time, the focus on big trips is more nuanced.
In these navigations, Holland America allows their guests to dictate their inactivity time activities and offer facilities and support as necessary. The Pickleball and the bridge are funds: the teams are long data and the rivalries are fierce.
But there are also reading clubs and religious study groups. The less structured activities include a travel diary meeting that I joined while I was on board, where a crew member facilitated and provided supplies. More formal art classes are established as a progressive series, since they would be on land, something that would not be possible in a shorter cruise. The test is in the quality of the work, which was exhibited in a special gallery on the ship.
One of Grand World Voyages’s best known activities is his knit group, which makes blankets for Linus projectA charitable organization that benefits children in need. Guests Marty and Gail Gotlieb have directed blanket manufacturing efforts on six Grand World trips; This includes supplying and organizing almost a million yards of thread, which provide the weavers on board without cost. Some Grand World trips have resulted in the donation of more than 1,000 blankets.
Marty was succinct when it came to the objectives of the project. “This is not for you to do a project for you,” he said, while showing some rookies to weave how to create your first stitches. “This is all for Project Linus.”
In addition to the thread and improvised lessons of Marty, the group also provides binders of patterns and sample samples created by previous guests.
The future of the great trips of Holland America
President of New Holland America Beth Bodensteiner He has been sincere about whether the guest experience of the line will change on his watch. It won’t.
He reiterated this in a session on board with the guests during this year’s great world trip, another exclusive benefit to book this cruise. He also made it clear that the Grand Voyages program is important for the line and that small improvements (different shows, a new conference program) are guided directly with the comments of the guests.
In 2027, after another year of omitting the Red Sea, Holland America will return to circumnavigating the world for its great world trip. The reason? The guests requested it, for what is happening.
